Taking inspiration from tradition while utlising the very latest in sustainable construction, this footbridge, developed with specialist timber engineers from Eurban, consists of two deep glu-lam trusses with an intermediate cross-laminated deck plate of glu-lam timber. The trusses and deck are protected by polished bronze and quartz-impreganted concrete respectively. Sunlight reflected in the river is captured in an abstracted pattern of perforations along the balustrade, the density of which increase at the middle of the span, reducing the weight and attenuating wind loading where deflection is greatest. Two Poplar trees form a natural portal to the bridge which slopes gently towards a quartz-concrete ramp and granite steps, integrated along the existing stone wall. A new shared surface zone is also created, framed by two new seats: one formed against the bridge abutment while the other rests against an existing wall under the shade of a large Horse Chestnut tree.
